Companies of PCUV receive the customized competitiveness report of the GECE Observatory

15/03/2019

The professor of Business Management and researcher of the Ivie, Alejandro Escribá, emphasizes that "the companies that must render accounts are more competitive"

"Understand the internal factors that improve business competitiveness, that make certain companies earn money in the short and long term, be solvent and generate cashflow. This is the objective of the Observatory of Government, Strategy and Business Competitiveness (GECE) of the Comunitat Valenciana, a non-profit organization whose services are free and which has been developed by the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie) with the support of the Chair of Family Business of the University of Valencia and the sponsorship of Bankia". With these words the economist Alejandro Escribá began his speech as guest speaker of the Speed-Café Networking in the business area of the PCUV. Next to him were also Carlos Aguilera, Director of Business of Bankia, and Ángel Luis Rojas, Director of the Paterna Business Center.

Escribá is a professor at the Department of Business Management of the University of Valencia, director of the Chair of Family Business and associate researcher at the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie). With the project of the Observatory GECE seeks to define the profile of Valencian companies and individually of each one. The analyzes can be done only with data that are public, such as the one that has been delivered to the companies today, "but they can also be deeper; in that case, you just have to sign up for free on our panel and we will not take away more than 15 minutes a year" , has explained.

In those that this morning Alejandro Escribá has delivered to the heads of companies of the Science Park, the Observatory contemplates the position of the company in four cuartiles of competitiveness (superior companies, solid companies, modest companies and fragile companies) and indicates its competitive profile with regard to medium and long term profitability, solvency in the short and medium term, generation of liquidity and productivity (assets and employment).

P1033174The customized report indicates the competitive profile of the company based on various ratios

So far, the GECE Observatory has published two reports on the competitiveness and governance of the Valencian business sector. From these, Alejandro underlined some conclusions. "Within the quartiles in which we could divide the companies and that would each include 25% each one, it is surprising to know that in the Comunitat Valenciana there are more fragile (28%) and less superior (23%). However, in competitive areas such as Madrid, the Basque Country and Catalonia this ranking does work and even grows positive, that is, there are more companies than fragile," Escribá pointed out.

With regard to the government system, "and according to data from the commercial register, 70% of Valencian companies have a single administrator; that is, there is no advice. This model leads to a company where government decisions lack a diversity of perspectives and analysis. However, with only public data, what we can not know is how many unique administrators have analysis tips," he said. In this sense, Alejandro Escribá argues that the reports show that "companies that have an obligation to respond to others are more competitive".

On the verge of publishing the third report of the GECE Observatory, referring to the business strategy, Alejandro Escribá  advanced that "there is a clear association between the most exporting profiles and greater direct investment. Maybe it's because diversifying risks and markets improves competitiveness. One thing improves the other and vice versa."
