This award given to Professor Valle, a researcher at the Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), located in the scientific-academic area of the University of Valencia Science Park (PCUV) recognizes his extensive experience in supervising and protecting young researchers, and especially in the management of doctoral theses.
Professor ad honorem José W. Furtado Valle, founding member of the AHEP (Astroparticles and High Energy Physics) group at the Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), joint centre of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the University of Valencia (UV) located in the University of Valencia Science Park (PCUV), has been awarded at the third edition of the Margarita Salas Medal.
The CSIC created the Margarita Salas Medal in 2022 with the aim of highlighting the importance of leadership in the professional development of researchers. The prize awarded to Professor Valle recognizes his extensive experience in supervising and mentoring young researchers, particularly in conducting doctoral theses.
Throughout his career, Professor Valle has directed or co-directed 22 doctoral theses defended at the University of Valencia since 1990. Almost half of them are non-Spanish researchers in training, and four of the supervised individuals were awarded the Extraordinary Doctorate Prize. Many of these researchers hold permanent positions in scientific institutions in Spain and other Latin American countries. On the other hand, other people continued their professional career beyond academic, in sectors such as aeronautics, energy, big data or software development, in addition to medical physics or scientific dissemination.

The jury also valued the local supervision of pre-doctoral and postdoctoral staff from other international groups during their stay at IFIC. In particular, Valle was the coordinator of a European project for the training of young pre-doctoral researchers (European Commission Research Training Site on Particle Physics Beyond the Standard Model, 2000-2004).
