Antonio Camacho, professor of the Department of Microbiology and Ecology and researcher of the Cavanilles Institute, has been elected president of the European Federation of Freshwater Sciences (EFFS). This entity includes the European scientific societies dedicated to the study of continental waters, their living beings and their linked ecosystems. It includes almost 10000 European scientists and professionals of this field.

The election has taken place in the recent Symposium of European Freshwater Sciences celebrated in the Czech Republic. The scientist has been unanimously supported by all the national societies of Europe. Within this association, Antonio Calvo has already been the promoter of the award to the best doctoral thesis on aquatic ecosystems, as well as collaborative research projects for young scientists in the field of the continental waters study, in whose current edition 47 young researchers of 16 research centres located at 11 European country take part.

Within the Limnology research group of the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, this professor coordinates the ecological and biogeochemical studies about the working of lakes and wetlands, including the ones that are related to the carbon sequestration for the mitigation of the climate change and the emission of greenhouse gases on the part of these ecosystems, as well as their modelling. This group also conducts applied works, especially the ones related to the implementation of European environmental directives, such as the Water Framework Directive and the Habitats Directive, as well as other related to the management for the preservation of these ecosystems and the sustainable use of the aquatic resources.
