The spin-off of the University of Valencia, Evolving Therapeutics, hosted at the UV Science Park, has been awarded in the twelfth edition of Holcim's Ponemos la Primera Piedra Awards
This award recognizes his business idea within the biotechnology sector applied to healthcare, focused on the development of advanced therapies based on bacteriophages (phages) to combat bacteria that are multiresistant to antibiotics.
The technological basis focuses on the use of phages, viruses that infect specific bacteria, as therapeutic agents. The development of a new technology allows them to design specific phage cocktails against multi-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains, which are one of the most deadly and difficult to treat bacterial species. In the medium term, the objective is to apply this technology to the plant, veterinary and human health sectors, once regulations allow the therapeutic use of phages.
On the other hand, the second prize went to the Valencian company Vesta Z, for its advanced digital platform that centralizes the purchase and sale of spare parts for public works, heavy and mining machinery. The tool enables easy access to the stock of most warehouses in Spain and Europe.
The contest recognizes the entrepreneurial capacity and business creativity of the Valencian Community, helping the implementation of innovative projects focused on sustainability, innovation, technology, environment or social impact, and aligned with at least one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. It is endowed with 15,000 euros, divided into two categories, 9,000 and 6,000 euros, which must be invested in the implementation of the projects.
The jury of the XII edition of the Ponemos la Primera Piedra Awards is formed by the University of Valencia, the European Center for Innovative Enterprises of Valencia (CEEI), the Association of Young Entrepreneurs of Valencia (AJEV), the City of Sagunto, the Association of Entrepreneurs of Camp de Morvedre (ASECAM), the Association of Entrepreneurs of the Valencian Community (AME), the Association of Businesswomen and Professionals (EVAP), and the Association of Technical Engineers of Public Works of Valencia and Castellón (CITOP-CV).
In addition, Holcim has announced the launch of a special edition of the Ponemos la Primera Piedra Award to support entrepreneurship projects of those entrepreneurs and small businesses located in the towns that have been affected by the DANA. With this, the company wants to support the implementation of innovative projects in a particularly complicated situation that can contribute to the reconstruction and economic development of the region.
Evolving Therapeutics
Evolving Therapeutics is a spin-off of the University of Valencia located in the Science Park based on the implementation of the use of bacteriophages, bacterial viruses commonly known as phages, for the treatment of pathogenic bacteria under the One Health concept. They offer scientific advisory services and customized phage-based solutions for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of pathogenic bacteria, including Human, Animal and Plant Health. As well as isolation and production of specific phages against problem bacteria, with pathogen-targeted, zero waste and environmentally sustainable therapies. Services include the diagnosis and detection of target bacteria through the development of phage-derived technologies, isolation and characterization of phages, use of phages as biocides or antimicrobials, as well as the implementation of personalized therapies.
