The microwave technology company for materials processing housed at the Parc Científic de la Universitat de la Universitat de València (PCUV) hosted the first meeting of the project for the revaluation of iron for the periodic presentation of results, on September 11 and 12, with the attendance of representatives of the European Commission
On the horizon of the energy transition and circular economy, the TransZeroWaste (TZW) consortium is pursuing the development of new technologies for the electrification of the steel industry to revalorize iron from low-grade waste to obtain steel with a low carbon footprint, high yield and capacity for new raw materials.
The new technologies developed in the project will allow the reduction of dependence on the use of fossil fuels and the energy transition towards electrification and digitalization of the steel sector, less dependent on external influence, in order to comply with the transition path towards a green industry and contributing to the circular economy, objectives of the European Union.
With a 48-month duration, the Horizon Europe-IA project, which is in its second year of implementation and will end in November 2026, is coordinated by the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and has a budget of more than six million euros. “CEINNMAT is participating with a budget of €1,145,500. The consortium is made up of twelve specialist partners from eight European countries (Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Greece, Poland, Portugal and Spain) and involves more than 50 scientists and researchers from public research centers, universities and private companies,” explains Mar Urquiola, operations manager of the company based at the Science Park.

The materials processing technology company is in charge of the industrial development of the electrification technology and the manufacturing of the pilot plant for waste and steel raw material recovery processes. “The collaboration with a consortium of Spanish and European specialized centers allows the acceleration of the microwave technologies developed by CEINNMAT to the industry,” says Angel López, CEO of CEINNMAT.
On September 11 and 12, the company hosted the first regular results presentation meeting at the PCUV facilities, attended by representatives of the European Commission. “It has been a great satisfaction for the whole consortium because of the relevance of the progress of some very promising results”, celebrate CEINNMAT's managers.
