08/04/2019

The number of companies and entities installed in the Science Park of the Universitat de València grows to 91, which means the direct employment of 520 people in the business area; that is, 9% more than last year.

According to the report prepared by the University of Valencia Science Park Foundation (FPCUV) based on the survey of companies and entities installed in this innovation ecosystem, which were asked about their business activity in the year 2017, four major areas of work highlight in the PCUV: 'Engineering, Consulting and Advisory', 'Agro-Food-Biotechnology', 'Medicine and Health' and 'Information, Computing and Telecommunications'. These four concentrate practically 80% of the companies. The companies dedicated to Engineering, Consulting and Advisory grow specially, they go from encompassing 19% of the total in 2015 to assume a 21% in 2017.

Regarding the year of incorporation of the companies to the PCUV, 50% have been installed in the innovation ecosystem of the University in the last 4 years. 18.3% corresponds to the longest-lived companies, which were installed in a period that varies between 8 and 10 years.

The average value of the figure of assets and liabilities of the companies in the year 2017 slightly exceeds one million euros (1,049,931 €). However, the high dispersion of this variable should be highlighted, with a standard deviation of almost 2 million euros, which reflects the extraordinary variety of companies present in the PCUV. The segment of companies that enter between 100,000 and 500,000 euros turns out to be the majority. And if you look at the net amount of the turnover generated by the companies located in the Science Park -without taking into account the four largest companies with the highest turnover- amounts to 2017 at 48, 17 million euros.

Patents and scientific publications

84.4% of the companies have less than 10 workers (they are micro-enterprises or startups) and the university qualification of the people hired is of higher university studies in 85.3% of the employees, of the that 20.6% have a doctorate.

44.7% of companies and entities have protected research results. Of these, 52% have a patent and 69% have at least one trademark or distinctive sign. In total, the business area of the Science Park accumulates 127 patents granted and 155 patents requested. In addition, 4 out of 10 companies have made scientific publications during the last 4 years.

If we put the focus on the distribution by gender, 22.5% of the companies located in the Science Park are headed by women. We must take into consideration the Spanish average (13.9%) and European (14.8%), according to data from the European Startup Monitor. Most of these companies belong to the Agro-Food-Biotechnology area.
