Five projects of IATA-CSIC researchers approved by the AVI for innovation grants

29/09/2023

Five projects of researchers from the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC), located in the scientific-academic area of the University of Valencia Science Park, have been approved by the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI) to receive innovation grants

The projects presented by Yolanda Sanz, Gaspar Pérez, María Carmen Collado, Amparo López and Luis González from the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC), located at the University of Valencia Science Park (PCUV), have received approval from the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI) to receive funding in the 2023 call for grants from the Program for the Valorization and Transfer of Research Results to Companies (Lines 1 and 2) and the Program for Strategic Projects in Cooperation.

Together with them, three other CSIC researchers: Joseba Alonso (I3M), María Domínguez Castellano (IN) and Leandro Peña (IBMCP) will receive these grants, which are aimed at strengthening and developing the Valencian Innovation System for the improvement of the productive model in the period 2023-2025. The total sum of the grants awarded to CSIC centers in the Valencian Community during these three years amounts to 2,972,626.85 euros.

Valorization and Transfer Program (lines 1 and 2)

On the one hand, the Program for the Valorization and Transfer of Research Results to Companies (Line 1) seeks to support the development of technologies, products or services generated from the results of the work carried out by the research groups of the Valencian scientific system so that they reach a sufficient degree of development to allow their incorporation into companies. Line 1 of this program has a total budget of 4,285,589.46 euros.

The project Valorization of an automated AI-based platform to accelerate drug discovery and frailty markers is coordinated by María Domínguez, CSIC research professor at the Institute of Neurosciences (IN, CSIC - UMH). The amount awarded to the project is 499,663.42 euros.

Likewise, the project Low-cost, high-performance magnetic resonance scanner with views and image-free diagnosis (Views) is coordinated by Joseba Alonso, CSIC researcher at the Institute of Instrumentation for Molecular Imaging (I3M, CSIC - Universitat Politècnica de València). The project has a grant of 441,733.91 euros.

The project A sustainable product for the treatment of Xylella fastidiosa using nanoparticles (XyNano) is coordinated by Gaspar Pérez, a researcher at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA, CSIC) and has a budget of 336,376.60 euros.

The last of the CSIC projects approved in this program is entitled Biotics to Promote Healthy Dietary Intake (BITASAL) and is coordinated by Yolanda Sanz, research professor at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA, CSIC). The aid granted amounts to 381,256.67 euros.

On the other hand, the Program for the Strengthening of scientific units for the development of technologies and the dissemination of knowledge to the company (Line 2) supports the creation of new structures within research institutes or groups, which incorporate personnel and the necessary means to develop innovations based on the "upstream" knowledge emanating from the research of the groups. These innovations should be market-oriented, as a way of bringing knowledge closer to the company. Line 2 of this program has a total budget of 3,106,559.27 euros.

The project Promotion and exploitation of results and management of capacities from its Knowledge Transfer Unit (UCIE of IATA-CSIC) is coordinated by Amparo López, CSIC researcher at IATA-CSIC. The project has a grant of 448,412.94 euros.

Strategic Cooperation Projects Program

On the other hand, the Strategic Projects in Cooperation Program aims to support the development of large R&D&I projects in cooperation between several agents of the Valencian Innovation System, as a way to develop joint solutions to problems of common interest. This program has a total budget of 17,766,263.19 euros.

The project Genetic improvement of mandarin trees: Evaluation of a strategy for the elimination of transgenes in citrus edited plants (RICH-CIT) is led by Leandro Peña, CSIC researcher at the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology of Plants (IBMCP, CSIC - Universitat Politècnica de València), and has an approved CSIC grant of 300,000.68 euros. The project is executed in a consortium formed by the IBMCP and the company GCM Citrus S.L., with a total budget of 526,333.21 euros.

The project Metagenomic and functional study of the microbiome for the development of personalized functional foods in reproductive health (REPROBIOMA), led by María Carmen Collado, a scientist at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA, CSIC), has been approved a grant of 368,842.60 euros. The project is developed thanks to the consortium formed by IATA itself, Darwin Bioprospecting Excellence S.L., Instituto Benabeu S.L. and the company Korott S.L.U. The total eligible expenditure of the project is 810,418.19 euros.

The participation of CSIC in the project New biological control methods based on microorganisms for citrus postharvest (POSTHARVESTLIFE) is coordinated by Luis González Candelas, researcher at IATA. It has been granted a grant of 196,340.03 euros. The project is developed in consortium between IATA itself, the Technological Center AINIA, the small company Darwin Bioprospecting Excellence S.L. and the company Frutinter S.L. The total budget of the project is 747,766.50 euros.
