09/01/2026

Sara Sánchez López, researcher linked to the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC), research centre of the University of Valencia Science Park (PCUV), participated in the 38th edition of the VLC DataBeers initiative (DataBeersVLC #38), in which it presented the MANUELA project, a citizen science initiative that aims to reduce the gender gap in biomedical research

With this activity, the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology (IATA-CSIC), located in the scientific-academic area of the University of Valencia Science Park (PCUV), and the DATABEERs Collective seek to foster communication and dissemination of data science advances and benefits in a fun, relaxed and fun way.

In the day, which brought together more than a hundred attendees, Sara Sánchez López gave an informative talk, in a relaxed tone and with touches of humor, entitled 'Missing data, present inequalities'.

During the talk she presented the MANUELA project, a citizen science initiative to assess the impact that diet and lifestyle have on women’s health in Spain. Aims to reduce the gender gap in biomedical research. The project analyses how the microbiota, diet and lifestyle affect women’s health, highlighting the historical lack of studies focusing on the female population in disciplines such as biology, pharmacology or physiology.

MANUELA aims to help women make informed decisions about the care of their microbiota. Composed of microorganisms that inhabit different parts of the body, the microbiota plays a crucial role in various vital processes. Through this project, data on eating habits, lifestyle and health status, among others, will be collected to identify their relationship with the microbiota.

In addition to Sánchez López, also participated in the conference Ruth López, from the Mobility Service of the City Council of Valencia, Francesc Doménech, engineer of Artificial Intelligence of the University of Valencia, and Joan Vila, professor of Electronic Engineering of the University of Valencia.

The VLC DataBeers collective is made up of research staff from the Higher Technical School of Engineering (ETSE-UV) and professors from the degrees in Computer Engineering and Data Science from the University of Valencia. Through this initiative they organize lectures and dissemination sessions on data science applied to different fields.
