Two researchers from the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) have been awarded at the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) Awards. Gonzalo Abellán Sáez, leader of ICMol’s 2D-Chem research group and associate professor at the University of Valencia, has been awarded one of the Excellence in Research 2025 (RSEQ) Awards. José Jaime Baldoví, distinguished researcher of the GenT Programme of the Generalitat Valenciana and responsible for the 2D Smart Materials group at ICMol of the University of Valencia (UV), has been awarded the Young Investigator Award 2025 in the category  "Group Leader"

The 2025 Excellence in Research Awards of the Royal Spanish Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) have awarded prizes to two researchers from the Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol), located in the scientific-business area of the University of Valencia’s Science Park (PCUV). Gonzalo Abellán Sáez, leader of ICMol’s 2D-Chem research group and associate professor at the Universitat de València, has been awarded one of the RSEQ 2025 Awards for Research Excellence. This prestigious award marks his outstanding scientific career in the development of new two-dimensional materials and their impact on the field of molecular chemistry.

On the other hand, José Jaime Baldoví Jachán, distinguished researcher of the GenT Program of the Generalitat Valenciana and responsible for the 2D Smart Materials group at ICMol, has been awarded the Young Researcher Award 2025 in the "Group Leader" category by the RSEQ. This award recognizes excellence in the creation and consolidation of emerging research groups in the field of chemistry by young Spanish scientists.

The award was announced on April 30, 2025, following the approval by the RSEQ General Assembly of the proposal submitted by the Jury during its meeting the previous day. The list of winners in the different categories includes some of the most outstanding figures of contemporary chemistry in Spain. The award ceremony will take place during the RSEQ Young Chemical Researchers' Symposium in November.

José J. Baldoví, Young Researcher Award

In addition to leading his research group at ICMol, José J. Baldoví is president of ACCENT, the Association of Scientists for Excellence of the GenT Programme, a full member of the Spain Young Academy, and a member of the teaching and research staff of the UV Physical Chemistry Department. Currently leading an ERC Starting Grant project and representing Spain on the COST SuperQumap Steering Committee. "I am deeply grateful to all members of my research group for their passion, dedication and perseverance. This award is a recognition of the work we do every day," said Baldoví when he heard about the ruling.

The researcher obtained his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the Universitat de València in 2009, followed by a master’s degree and a doctorate in the group of Professor Eugenio Coronado at ICMol, obtaining extraordinary awards at all stages of his academic career. His doctoral thesis was selected as the best chemistry thesis of his cohort. In 2017 he moved to the University of the Basque Country and later became a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Structure and Dynamics of Matter in Hamburg, Germany. He returned to the Valencian Region in 2020 thanks to the GenT Programme, and since 2024 he has held the position of Distinguished Researcher of Excellence.

"I am deeply grateful to all the members of my research group for their passion, dedication and perseverance. This award is a recognition of the work we do every day", José B. Baldoví, ICMol researcher

His research focuses on the development of theoretical and computational frameworks for the chemical design of molecular intelligent devices and 2D for information technologies. His work brings together physics, chemistry and materials science to explore emerging applications in magnonic, spintronics, quantum computing and sensing devices.

Currently oversees a Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellow, two additional post-doctoral researchers, five PhD students and two undergraduate students from five different nationalities. He has published more than 80 articles in international journals, a book chapter and three scientific papers, and has given some 40 guest lectures at international conferences and 18 seminars.

Among other distinctions, he received the 17th "Ciudad de Algemesí" Scientific and Technical Award for Young Researchers (2022), the "La Costera" Award from the Rotary Club of Xàtiva (2023), and the 9 d'Octubre Award from the Municipality of Xàtiva (2024). He has visited 61 countries, is fluent in six languages and holds a master’s degree in Science Communication, which has enabled him to be actively involved in public outreach and the dissemination of science.
