The Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol), located in the scientific-academic area of the Science Park University of Valencia (PCUV), has been accredited again as a Maria de Maeztu Unit of Excellence in the 2024 call, strengthening its international leadership in scientific research. This prestigious recognition is granted by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities through the State Research Agency (AEI), as part of its excellence programme for leading research centres and units
The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, presided over the official accreditation ceremony held at the University of Zaragoza on 16 July. During his speech, she stressed that these badges represent "a remarkable boost to the quality of Spanish scientific research" and recognized the centers and units awarded as "the vanguard of this Spain which is based on science as an essential axis of a democratic, social and economic project".
In this edition, the programme allocates more than 75 million euros to finance the work of 9 centres and 8 units of excellence, including the Institute for Molecular Science (ICMol), which is located in the scientific-academic area of the Science Park University of Valencia (PCUV). Each Maria de Maeztu unit will receive €2.25 million over the next four years, which will strengthen its strategic plans, train new researchers, and boost its visibility and ability to attract talent.
The minister also announced an increase for the next call (2025), which will have 78 million euros. The distinction 'María de Maeztu' reinforces the role of ICMol as an international reference in molecular science, and represents a new milestone for the research and innovation ecosystem of the Scientific Park of the University of Valencia, which continues to host and promote projects of excellence with global impact.
