The 'Nature Index', an international ranking that evaluates the productivity and quality of research, has positioned the Universitat de València (UV) as the best academic institution in chemical research among the universities in Spain, followed by the University of Barcelona (UB) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) . The Nature Index 2019 Annual Tables highlights the institutions and countries which dominated research in natural sciences in 2018.

Also, the UV is among the 50 best academic institutions in Europe in the subject of chemistry according to the Nature Index, rising a 17.2% over the previous year. The Institute of Molecular Science (ICMol) has a prominent role in this excellent position, as the chemical research at the Universitat de València is mainly carried out at this institute.

Taking into account other areas, such as life sciences and physical sciences, the UV appears in the Nature Index ranking as the fifth best Spanish University in this subjects.

The Nature Index confirms what other prestigious international rankings had previously stated. The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) positioned the Universitat de València as the second best university in the world in the area of “Chemistry, inorganic & nuclear” for the period 2018/2019.

What is Nature Index?

The Nature Index was first developed in 2013. It is a database of information about researchers and basic research articles published in a selected group of 68 high quality scientific journals in the natural sciences. The database is compiled by Nature Research. The 68 journals included in nature INDEX represent less than 1% of the journals covering the natural sciences in the Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), but represent about 30% of the total number of citations from science journals. Provides information on quality research outputs at the institutional level. The item count is done in two ways: 1. Number of items (AC), and 2. Fractional Count (FC).
