The Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), a research centre at the UV Science Park, is leading this initiative, which comprises four European academic groups, one company, two hospitals and a patient association. The new method will improve the image quality that guides this therapy, in addition to the dosimetry of the treatment
A team from the Institute of Corpuscular Physics (IFIC), located in the scientific-academic area of the University of Valencia Science Park (PCUV), and joint center of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) and the University of Valencia (UV), is at the forefront of a new initiative to combat cancer from medical physics. The AIDER project, coordinated by researcher Gabriela Llosá, aims to develop a medical imaging tool for targeted therapy with radioactive atoms or radionuclides. Four European academic groups, one company, two hospitals and a patient association form the consortium which will work together for four years.
Directed radionuclide therapy (TRD or TRT) uses radiopharmaceuticals to deliver radiation selectively to cancer cells in specific target organs. Radionuclides (radioactive atoms) emit radiation when they disintegrate, and destroy cancer cells. Accurate quantification of radiation dose to lesions and organs at risk is crucial for improving patient treatment safety and reducing side effects.
The AIDER project will build an imaging system based on a technology initially developed by the IFIC’s IRIS group, increasing its performance through the integration of state-of-the-art detectors and electronics. It will also improve the image quality and dosimetry of treatments
The consortium comprises experts from the Claude Bernard University of Lyon and its affiliated institutions CNRS and INSA of Lyon, the Léon Bérard Hospital of Lyon and the company DAMAVAN Imaging, on behalf of France; the Politecnico di Milano (Italy); the Institute of Medical Engineering of the Universität zu Lübeck (Germany); and the University and Polytechnic Hospital La Fe of Valencia, as well as the Association of Parents of Children with Cancer of the Valencian Community.
