Valencia European Green Capital, IRTIC of the University of Valencia and the company Kiwa Spain have launched the research project 'Green, healthy and sustainable Valencia'. The aim is to measure the impact that the city has on the health of the people who live in it and transfer it to other cities in the world, especially in the framework of the EU Green Capital
A team from the University Institute for Research in Robotics and Information and Communication Technologies (IRTIC), located in the University of Valencia Science Park, the Las Naves Foundation of the City of Valencia, the Department of Health and Kiwa Spain, in the framework of the European Green Capital held by the city of Valencia this 2024, have just started the project 'Green, healthy and sustainable Valencia'. The initiative aims to assess the effects of air quality, noise, green spaces, temperature and mobility of citizens in order to improve their quality of life and continue moving towards sustainable development.
The research, which will focus on Valencia as a model city and pilot project, is based on the analysis of large volumes of data obtained through geographic information, satellite data, AI algorithms and modeling to identify patterns and trends to assess the impact of implemented policies. Experts in public health, urban planning and the environment, as well as citizens themselves, will collaborate in the project.
Through the development of this research project, European Green Capital 2024 aims to quantify the sustainability of the city and establish a roadmap for subsequent extrapolation to other cities and for the future.
The European Green Capital is a recognition in the city of Valencia as regards Europe, which confirms its commitment to sustainability and its aim to improve the quality of life of its inhabitants. The project is led by the certification company Kiwa España.
IRTIC will advise Kiwa in establishing and identifying the most relevant sustainability indicators and will be responsible for providing an ICT platform to collect data from different sources to calculate these sustainability indices and validate their effectiveness. In the initial phase, the project will focus on the city of Valencia, and these indicators can be extrapolated to other municipalities in the province as part of the actions developed from the Chair of Smart and Sustainable Territories, in the process of being established by the University of Valencia and the Provincial Council of Valencia.
