The professor of Physics of the Earth José A. Sobrino has been appointed scientific member of the High Advisory Council on R + D + i, the body advising the Consell on research, development and innovation. The scientist from the University of Valencia, who joins the organisation in his capacity as a Rei Jaume I Award, will guide the Consell in matters of environmental protection and will contribute to promoting the future Law of Science.

José Antonio Sobrino becomes part of this council after having received in 2019 the Jaume I Research Award in the category of Environmental Protection, for his research on planetary changes and the creation of algorithms to calculate the surface temperature of the Earth and the oceans.

The High Advisory Council on Research, Development and Innovation advises the Generalitat Valenciana on R & D & I policies, preparing studies on the situation of science and technological development in the Valencian Community for its consideration by the Valencian Government. In addition, it carries out scientific dissemination actions –conferences, seminars, publications, etc.– aimed at contributing and socially disseminating the value of research, development and innovation.

José Antonio Sobrino is professor of Physics of the Earth and researcher at the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL) of the University of Valencia. He is president of the Spanish Remote Sensing Association, member of the Advisory Group of the LSTM mission of the European Space Agency (ESA), member of the scientific committee of the Franco-India TRISHNA mission, editor-in-chief of the international journal Frontiers in Remote Sensing, coordinator of the National Earth Observation Network (RNOT) and founding president of the International Congress Recent Advances in Quantitative Remote Sensing, among other positions.

As an Earth physicist specialised in Remote Sensing, his research lines focus on the study of the changes that our planet undergoes, analysed with the support of Remote Sensing satellites and the digital processing of the images provided by them. He has more than 300 publications in high impact scientific journals; is the main researcher in more than 60 projects funded by Spain, the European Union (EU) and the European Space Agency (ESA), and has directed 20 doctoral theses.

The scientific members of the High Advisory Council are integrated into the commissions depending on the type of award received. Therefore, the protection of the environment from remote sensing data and the observation of the Earth will be the main area of advice for the professor of the University of Valencia.

This year the 2019 Rei Jaume I Awards –Xavier Tolsa Domènech, José García Montalvo, Pura Muñoz Cánoves, José Antonio Sobrino Rodríguez; Aníbal Ollero Baturone and Carlota Pi Amorós– and the 2020 awards –Francisco José García Vidal, Diego Puga Pequeño, Miguel Beato del Rosal, Fernando Maestre Gil; Laura Lechuga Gómez and Verónica Pascual Boé– are incorporated to the High Council.

The incorporation of all of them to the High Advisory Council on R + D + i of the Valencian Community took place last Friday at a ceremony held at the Generalitat Palace.
