University of Valencia Science Park promotes the scientific and technological curiosity of students in Expoinnova 2025

20/11/2025

University of Valencia Science Park (PCUV) became on 15, 16 and 17 October a meeting point between science, innovation and curiosity with the celebration of the sixth edition of Expoinnova, techniques between secondary school pupils, baccalaureate and training cycles

In this edition, artificial intelligence and sustainability were the main focus of a programme involving professionals and research staff linked to the ecosystem of the University of Valencia Science Park (PCUV): Pau Sendra, professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Valencia; Lorena Martínez, co-founder, CTO and data scientist at Datipic; Rafael Muñoz-Espí, from the Institute of Materials Science (ICMUV); Verónica Larrieux, founder of Armoniats; Javier Cupeiro, AI specialist at Grupo Oesia; and Alicia Carpio, independent consultant and collaborator of Qomer.

Close-knit science and entrepreneurial spirit

The director of the Science Park, Pedro Carrasco, was in charge of opening the conference highlighting that the purpose of Expoinnova is to "show that science can also be fun" and help students discover careers such as mathematics or engineering.

The programme coordinator at the Fundació Parc Cientifico UV, Encarna Torres, stressed "the importance of disseminating science through practice and experience, bringing it closer to the everyday life of students and encouraging them to present their own innovative ideas in the future".

Professor Pau Sendra opened the talks with the talk What if you were the generation that changes everything? , in which he reflected on entrepreneurship and the value of ideas with social impact. "Entrepreneurship means having a proposal of value, thinking about how to improve people’s lives," he said, also recalling that "artificial intelligence will automate tasks, but decisions will still depend on us and us".

Understanding AI to use it better

Data scientist Lorena Martínez, co-founder and CTO of Datipic, continued with the talk ¡IA-lucina, neighbor!... or not? , in which he amply explained what it means that artificial intelligence "hallucinates" and why it is so important to formulate the questions well. "It is not the same to ask the AI for information on photosynthesis for a school paper as for a doctoral thesis. You always have to give it context," she said. His speech included an interactive questionnaire that sparked public participation.

"Entrepreneurship means having a value proposition, thinking about how to improve people’s lives. Artificial intelligence will automate tasks, but decisions will still depend on us and us", Pau Sendra, professor at the Universitat de València

Sustainable materials and people at the forefront of change

The second day, moderated by Laura Herraiz, from the Communication area of Valgenetics, focused on the challenges of sustainability and artificial intelligence.

The researcher Rafael Muñoz-Espí, from ICMUV, opened the session with Sustainable plastics? Yes, it's possible, a talk that invited to reflect on the responsible use of plastics and the need for recycling measures with common sense. "Plastics are neither good nor bad. The challenge is to learn how to use them in a sustainable way," he said.

"The future is not written by machines, but by people. You must be the ones who guide them", Veronica Larrieux, CEO of Armoniats

The engineer Verónica Larrieux, founder of Armoniats, then addressed how people can lead technological development in The future is written with AI. "The future is not written by machines, but by people. You must be the ones to guide them," she encouraged the participants, stressing the importance of maintaining curiosity, critical thinking and the desire to solve real problems.

Learning, sustainability and collaboration

The last day was presented by Kristin Suleng, Head of Communication and Marketing at FPCUV, who encouraged students to continue cultivating their curiosity: "The challenge does not end here; the real mission begins when curiosity becomes solutions".

The engineer Javier Cupeiro, from Grupo Oesía, opened the session with It’s not magic, it’s AI! How ChatGPT works from the inside, a participatory talk in which he explained concepts like the "context window" and analyzed the limits and possibilities of artificial intelligence models. "The future will not be choosing between people or machines, but learning to work together with AI," he said.

Alicia Carpio closed the show with The cool side of science. Towards social impact! , focused on food sustainability and the work of the Qomer company, born in the Amazon with the mission to promote the responsible use of natural resources and improve the quality of life of local communities. His intervention culminated in a symbolic game of twine, in which the students learned how to weave collaborative networks.

Science with art and sense

At the end of each day, participants were able to enjoy two CSIC itinerant exhibitions: FOTCIENCIA20, guided by Éric Úbeda (IATA-CSIC), with a selection of scientific photographs of great artistic value; and The molecules we eat, presented by Violeta Vila, Professor of the Faculty of Nursing and UV Podiatry, who explored the relationship between food, health and human evolution, breaking down myths and showing advances in food sustainability.
