New applicator for radiation therapy that improves the treatment of skin cancer in development

The Institute for Corpuscular Physics (Instituto de Física Corpuscular; IFIC) and the Department of Atomic, Molecular and Nuclear Physics of the University of Valencia have been collaborating on the design of a new device for applying radiotherapy to treat the most common type of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma, and, more generally, "nonmelanoma" cancer types. The system allows tumours of a larger diameter to be treated compared to its predecessor, the "Valencia applicator," which was developed by the same team and sold by Elekta. Physicists at the La Fe Hospital, General Hospital and Elekta have also been involved.
