Gustau Camps-Valls, IPL researcher, awarded the European Academy of Sciences' 2025 Blaise Pascal Medal

28/08/2025

Gustau Camps-Valls, a researcher at the Image Processing Laboratory (LPI) of the UV Science Park, has been awarded the 2025 Blaise Pascal Medal in Earth and Environmental Sciences by the European Academy of Sciences (EurASc). The jury highlighted the scientist’s pioneering contributions to integrating AI into climate science. The Medal will be awarded next December at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) as part of the EurASc 2025 Symposium and Ceremony

According to the jury’s decision, Gustau Camps-Valls "has revolutionised the way in which the Earth system is modelled and understood through hybrid approaches of Artificial Intelligence and causal inference. It was one of the first to integrate advanced machine learning methods with physical models of climate and environment, and introduced modern AI techniques into remote sensing and earth observation". His work has profoundly transformed the way environmental data is modelled and interpreted, opening up a new paradigm in geo-scientific understanding.

Gustau Camps-Valls is a professor of electronic engineering and head of the research group at the Image Processing Laboratory (IPL), located in the scientific-academic area of the Science Park of the University of Valencia (PCUV). His work focuses mainly on the development of machine learning algorithms for remote sensing data analysis, earth observation and numerous applications of geosciences. He is the author of more than 150 articles in international scientific publications, over 200 conference papers and 5 international books related to signal processing, data and machine learning methods.

He has coordinated 12 research projects, in addition to various contracts funded by the European Commission, the European Space Agency and EUMETSAT. Holder of a Consolidator Grant and is Principal Investigator and part of the international team with a Synergy Grant, both from the European Research Council (ERC), to advance statistical learning and modelling of the earth system, with innovative techniques that include understanding and causality of phenomena associated with climate change.

The Blaise Pascal Medal is a recognition of individuals for their outstanding contribution to science, technology and research education. The selection process of the winners involves a meticulous evaluation and assessment by the Division’s Scientific Committees, with the final approval of the EurASc General Council. This recognition is in addition to that already received by the researcher in 2024, when it was included in the Highly Cited Researchers (HCR), a ranking that includes the most cited scientists in the world.

The award ceremony will take place during the EurASc 2025 Symposium and Ceremony, to be held at CERN (Geneva, Switzerland) on 17-18 December 2025, where Gustau Camps-Valls will give a lecture.
